Business Spotlight: Lake of Bays welcomed a variety of new businesses in 2019!

The Township of Lake of Bays is home to many talented entrepreneurs with thriving small businesses that make up the fabric of the community. In 2019, Lake of Bays proudly welcomed a variety of new businesses that filled gaps in products or services and added diversity to the local economy.

As a new resident of Lake of Bays, Kayla McCormick opened the Baysville Barber in downtown Baysville when she recognized an opportunity in the local market. “My fiancé and I started coming up to Baysville and fell in love with the small-town charm and people that came with it!” said Kayla. “The response has been amazing to the barbershop opening.” Kayla’s specialty includes men’s care from classic cuts to bald fades and hot towel shaves, and she also welcomes female clients for cuts or basic colour.“

Inspire Coffee Roasting Co. is a home-based coffee roastery owned and operated by husband and wife team Jamie and Mellisa Sefton in Baysville. “Lake of Bays being such a beautiful area all year round, it made perfect sense to retire and start a new life adventure here” said Jamie. “The community support for our coffee business has been astounding and we look forward to growing our business here and supporting local entrepreneurs like ourselves.” Using only the finest organic, fair trade beans for roasting, their whole bean premium coffee can be purchased locally in Baysville at Humble Pie Butter Tart Factory & Pizzeria or Baysville General Store and at select locations across Muskoka.

In the heart of the waterfront community of Dorset, Peter Meraw opened Pharmasave Dorset Village Pharmacy as a response to the rising number of retirement aged people in the area and a local gap in pharmacy services. Located across the street from the Dorset Health Hub, Dorset Pharmasave provides residents, cottagers, and visitors with convenient access to over the counter medicines, home health care devices, diabetic supplies, cosmetics, and many other health and beauty items. Peter chose to invest in a start-up business in Dorset because he always loved the town growing up and would pass through it in his teens and twenties when heading into Algonquin Park for camping weekends. “With its spectacular view of Lake of Bays, the Dorset Tower, proximity to Algonquin Park, and the town's cute shops and restaurants, it’s a very attractive and memorable place” Peter said. “Furthermore, the people in the town have been fantastic and have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome!””

In the nearby community of Dwight, Richard Graham purchased the popular Dwight Market, a cornerstone of the Highway 60 business corridor. “Dwight and Oxtongue Lake are the last communities prior to entering the western gate of Algonquin Park so I knew with all the tourist traffic Dwight would be a prime choice for owning a business” said Richard. “As well, Dwight Market has long been a landmark in the community, and I thought that the addition of a full-service pharmacy would only enhance the services that we provide.” Rebranded as the Dwight Market Pharmacy, this establishment is now a full-service pharmacy that offers knowledge based prescription counseling, annual flu shots and other vaccination injections, compliance packaging, home health care supplies and sports braces. It is also a one-stop-shop for triple A grade meats, fresh produce, gourmet sauces, dressing and cheeses, dairy products, and vegetarian options.

Winterbottom Tattoo Company is a premier tattoo studio established in downtown Dwight. Specializing in traditional and realistic tattoo styles, award-winning artist Keith Winterbottom brings over 20 years of experience to Lake of Bays. “Our family roots in the area run deep and we are excited for a new adventure” said Keith. After owning and operating Citrus City Tattoo in Orangeville for almost 15 years, Keith and his wife Sara decided to make the move North with their family to find new inspiration. “We have received an overwhelming amount of support within the community. Muskoka has given us an incredible welcoming and we have made amazing connections” said Keith’s wife, Sara. The tattoo studio also features an impressive art gallery of Keith’s diverse range of custom work created with a variety of mediums and styles. Keith recently completed a special piece for the Cast Iron Restaurant in Baysville on a cast iron pan.

In a newly constructed facility in a prominent location in Dwight, Lawrence Automotive Inc. offers new school technology with old fashioned integrity. Owner and auto mechanic Clint Lawrence services all makes and models of domestic, foreign and European cars and trucks with his staff team of three. When asked why he chose to invest in expanding his business in Dwight, Clint said “it’s my hometown. It’s where I learned the trade and developed a customer base, and community support has been tremendous.”
