Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department Responds to Two Wildland Fires

(Huntsville/Lake of Bays) – It was a busy week for firefighters with the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department, responding to two separate wildland fires in the area.
On October 14th, the department was requested by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) to assist with a wildland fire on Stephenson Road 2. The fire covered approximately 2 acres. Firefighters worked alongside MNRF crews on the first day and then continued suppression and overhaul efforts on their own for the following two days. The fire was fully extinguished, and no structures were threatened.
A few days later, on October 17th, the department responded to a second wildland fire off Limberlost Road. The fire covered approximately 19 acres in a remote forested area. Crews from Huntsville and Lake of Bays worked for three days to bring the fire under control. No homes or buildings were in the area, and nothing was at risk.
“While both fires are now fully extinguished, they serve as a good reminder that wildland fires can still occur well into the fall,” said Steve Markham, Fire Prevention Officer. “Even when temperatures are cooler, dry leaves and vegetation can ignite easily under the right conditions.”
The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department reminds residents that while the fall season brings cooler temperatures, dry vegetation can still pose a fire risk. Residents are encouraged to follow all open-air burning regulations and check the Muskoka Fire Danger Rating before burning.
